Effective taxonomies help publishers enhance discoverability, streamline content classification, and leverage opportunities for behavior-based profiling and targeting to increase audience engagement.
The Atypon Experience Platform supports a sophisticated tagging framework that enables publishers to assign taxonomies to individual pieces of content based on any master list – for example, publishers can upload their own taxonomies, apply tags manually on-platform, derive tags directly from submitted content and use AI to apply taxonomy tags.
These comprehensive tagging capabilities are woven throughout the Atypon Experience Platform and go far beyond simply displaying keywords. Taxonomy tags can be applied to anything, including multimedia content, subscribers, licenses, and content products. They can be used to create targeted marketing campaigns, refine searches, make recommendations, track content usage by topic, and more.
Taxonomies are also incorporated in reports, so you can gauge how content on one topic is performing against content on another.
Tags and taxonomies underlie some of the Atypon Experience Platform’s core capabilities, including:

The Atypon Taxonomy
Properly semantically annotated content is crucial for information discovery, but creating and maintaining taxonomies is a time-consuming process, typically requiring the continual efforts of taxonomists and domain experts.
To address these challenges, Atypon built the Atypon Taxonomy which is a multi-discipline taxonomy covering 19 primary scientific disciplines and approximately 254,000 supporting concepts to scale to a publisher’s content.
The Atypon Taxonomy – initially based on the Microsoft Academic Graph taxonomy – is continuously updated based on collaboration from participating publishers (a ‘collective intelligence’ system whereby publishers share updates and improvements to the taxonomy and its classifier) and also Atypon itself, whose usage regularly enriches the tags and their metadata. Atypon updates the Atypon Taxonomy with this collective intelligence periodically every year.
The Atypon Taxonomy can be used as a standalone taxonomy or alongside proprietary ones to annotate and structure content uniformly.
Automatic semantic tagging with the Atypon Autotagger
Taxonomies can be applied manually or using Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered tools. Atypon has developed its own AI-powered tool called the Atypon Autotagger to support automatic semantic tagging based on the Atypon Taxonomy.
The Atypon Autotagger is an AI classification service – pre-trained for use alongside the Atypon Taxonomy – that applies semantic tags in real-time as content is uploaded to your site. By comparing many topic sample sets of how tags have previously been applied, the pretrained auto-tagger uses the Atypon Experience Platform to automatically proliferate tags based on the Atypon Taxonomy across the entire corpus of your content.
The Atypon Autotagger has won several awards in the international BioASQ challenge for semantic indexing and recently won the 2024 Biomedical Semantic QA award.
The Atypon Autotagger is an evolving tool that is continually enhanced as part of the Atypon Experience Platform product roadmap, as well as roadmaps for other Wiley Partner Solutions products.
